Launch week summary

It’s been an exciting launch week for Fossil Future.

The week began with some new attempts to cancel my book that once again backfired. Fossil Future hit as high as #84 on the Amazon Top 100 books list, and to my knowledge has already sold enough copies to comfortably make it onto the New York Times bestseller list. (Whether bias will prevent it from getting on the list remains to be seen.)

Here are the 3 things about the launch that make me happiest and most optimistic.

1. Extreme praise from allies. Some of the initial reviews have concluded that Fossil Future is, as I worked for 3 years to make it, a new level of argument for continuing fossil fuel use.

For example, Keith Lockitch, PhD (physics) and Senior Fellow, Ayn Rand Institute, wrote:

“I thought his first book, The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels, was an impressive, airtight defense of our continued use of fossil fuel energy. But Fossil Future, which supersedes Moral Case, is on a whole other level. It’s an astonishingly powerful work in the originality and persuasiveness of its arguments.”

Definitely read his full review. Keith really took the time to understand the book, including what makes it different from not only my previous book but from other excellent books by allied thinkers.

The whole structure of Epstein’s argument is radically different from the other three books [False Alarm, Unsettled, Apocalypse Never]. They each begin by focusing their efforts on refuting the alarmist perspective on climate change. The alternative perspective they each have to offer comes later and, in some respects, almost seems like an afterthought.

Epstein, by contrast, argues right out of the gate for a positive ideal: a future of unlimited human flourishing made possible, in part, by expanding our use of fossil fuels.

2. Totally new readers having their thinking changed.

I’m getting a lot of great feedback from first time readers. For one example that is particularly exciting to me—a long-time practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—check out this interview I did of wrestling legend and former MMA star Ben Askren, who read Fossil Future and had his thinking changed significantly.

3. Prominent hosts enthusiastically sharing my message with their audiences

As I’ll share in a moment, I’ve been doing a lot of media—especially long-form podcasts with large audiences. In every case, the hosts clearly understand that the pro-human, “full context” approach I’m taking to evaluating our energy choices is distinctive and powerful.
